Quintspinner – A Pirate’s Quest
It is 1717 and sixteen year old Tess chooses to sneak out of the house against her father’s wishes. In the London marketplace, she is assaulted before narrowly escaping to a stranger’s home. Once inside, she witnesses a murder and becomes the recipient of a dying woman’s ancient Spinner ring, only to be accused of having stolen it.
Upon her return home, she bears her father’s wrath and in defying his accusations, discovers a shocking family secret – she is not her parent’s biological child, but rather the granddaughter of their housekeeper.
Her world as she knows it, has been turned upside-down, its comfort and familiarity shredded beyond recognition in one miserable day.
Even so, Tess never imagines that, because of her father’s decision to relocate the entire family, she will soon find herself to be an unwilling passenger on board a merchant ship bound for the pirate-infested waters of the West Indies, forcibly betrothed to the murderer, and fighting to stay alive. With increasing dread, she realizes a growing attraction that she has for a handsome sailor puts both their lives at risk. Moreover, she quickly discovers that her ruthless fiance covets her only for her Spinner ring and its legendary prophetic power, and has gone to an unbelievable level of treachery to obtain it for himself: he has betrayed their whereabouts and arranged capture of their ship by a pirate crew.
The stakes for survival become unbearably high when Tess is thrust into the hands of the marauding band of hostile pirates bent on gathering tremendous treasures. Forced into making an agonizing, horrible choice – continued captivity amongst the pirates to suffer a violent and early death, or a plan a most likely doomed escape attempt for herself and her remaining family members during a hurricane – Tess realizes that the consequences may be disastrous either way as she must decide if the possession and power of the ring is worth the loss of everything – her family, her future love, and perhaps even her life.
Choosing to attempt the daring escape, Tess, her grandmother, and the sailor she has come to love, as well as a handful of other captives, wash up on an island shore where they are discovered by a band of Maroons (escaped slaves) and are taken to the safety of a hidden camp amidst the island’s mountainous interior. Tess begins a new life there, different from the one that she had envisioned for herself, but one that leaves her surrounded by the people she truly loves.
A tale of pirates and treasure, love and betrayal, all bound together by a dash of ancient magic, multiple award-winning Quintspinner has been described by readers as “a wonderfully entertaining, fast and furious ride; Lord of the Rings meets Pirates of the Caribbean”.
